ATTORNEY CHRISTIAN WISE PRESENTS

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

Know the law. Know what to say. Know what to do.

LEARN THE WISEUP 5 ↓
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

YOUR RIGHTS. YOUR POWER.

Police encounters can be stressful. Knowing your rights helps you stay composed, make informed decisions, and protect yourself.

THE WISEUP 5

01

STAY CALM.

Keep your hands visible. Speak clearly. Avoid sudden movements.

02

DON'T PHYSICALLY RESIST.

Even if you believe an officer is wrong, don't fight it out at the scene.

03

AM I FREE TO GO?

Ask clearly whether you are free to leave. If not, remain calm.

04

I DO NOT CONSENT.

You can clearly decline permission to search. A lawful search may still occur.

05

I WANT A LAWYER.

Say you want to remain silent and request an attorney. Don't assume silence alone communicates that choice.

IN THE MOMENT

KNOW WHAT TO SAY.

Short, clear statements can matter. The law depends on the circumstances, including whether you're detained or under arrest.

When you're unsure whether you can leave

“Am I free to go?”If the answer is no, don't walk away or physically resist.

When asked for permission to search

“I do not consent to a search.”Declining consent doesn't stop a search otherwise permitted by law.

When you don't want to answer questions

“I am invoking my right to remain silent. I want an attorney.”You may still need to provide identifying information or documents when legally required.

REAL LIFE. REAL RIGHTS.

WHEN IT MATTERS MOST.

TRAFFIC STOPS

Pull over safely, keep your hands visible, and provide required driving documents. Ask before reaching for anything.

SEARCHES

You can refuse consent, but officers may have another legal basis to search. Don't interfere physically; address legality afterward.

POLICE QUESTIONING

Don't guess, lie, or volunteer explanations. Clearly invoke your right to remain silent and request counsel when applicable.

General educational information, primarily focused on Georgia. Specific rights and obligations depend on the facts, applicable law, and whether you are detained, arrested, or in custody.
